There are moms for whom Barney’s will always be a store, not a dinosaur. Be it the pre-pregnancy phase, post-delivery period or any other time — these moms never have a dull style moment. A case in point being the hip Kareena Kapoor Khan and her entourage of girl gang comprising Malaika Arora, Amrita Arora Ladak and sis Karisma who always manage to marry style with functionality whenever they step out. While Kareena has shown a penchant for organic boho tunics, jackets and cocktail dresses, Malaika sort-of strikes a balance between being a boho nomad and a glam rock diva when she’s out partying. On the other hand, Amrita’s look is a mixed marriage of athleisure and sporty glam. These B-Town mummies make quite a transition from their brunch-perfect day outings to their cocktail hours when their statement red lips, contoured make-up and blow-dried mane make their presence felt.

Bestselling author, producer and a hands-on mom-on-the-go, Twinkle Khanna has shown a penchant for comfortable high street finds in a soothing palette of blue. Twinkle’s best bud Gayatri Oberoi mixes premium high street with designer luxe handbags. The risk-taking Sonali Bendre Behl is not averse to taking risk on red carpet (her feathered Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla cape look comes to mind), Anu Dewan’s envy-inducing closet is brimming with sugary, ruffled Gucci dresses of late and Lara Dutta Bhupathi often proves that she values comfort over what’s trending.

Internationally, Victoria Beckham has redefined yummy dressing dressing favouring comfy wide-legged trousers, turtle necks and cashmere jumpers. Her signature oversized sunnies add to the chic finish. Supermodel Coco Rocha is often seen twinning with her mini me on Instagram and the likes of Miranda Kerr and Blake Lively have proved that motherhood is no excuse for looking sloppy.

Soccer mom chic

All these ladies have learnt the trick of making the basic items look uber-cool and chic with a contemporary twist. Designer Aniket Satam says, “The Soccer moms essentials include — an extra large sweatshirt with an updated, torn and tattered grunge detail, loose tank tops layered with visible bralets, boxy shirt-dresses in denim, tartan or soft cotton. All these essentials are glamorously topped with ‘it’ accessories – like the it bags and aviator sunglasses.” Add a few vintage concert tees or anything military and one’s pretty much summed these fashion mamas.

Classic meets contemporary

Designer Rina Singh of label Eka is of the belief that being age and shape appropriate is key. “It’s crucial to create a style that’s your own personality — it could be laidback, organic, out of body, Indian/boho, leisure or a classic sari look.” Rina known for her craft-rich creations, suggests that an easy day wear dress can be easily morphed into an evening out option. “Invest in something which is classic and elegant yet contemporary at the same time. A good fit is key and it should be a comfortable length,” she ads.

A good summer jacket — it could be in floral print or crochet lace can be worn on a slip cotton dress or on a pair of pants or culottes or with a pair of denims.

Nix the rules

Gone are the days when you had to cover your baby bump under layers of clothing. Designer Paromita Banerjee Sarkar says, “Flaunting your pregnancy in style is the order of the day simply because most women have strong defining careers and have become that much more confident and the nine months of pregnancy is no exception to the rule.” She adds, “In fact there are hardly any rules now. Earlier, one had to stay cooped up at home, but now even doctors say that you need to be as active as possible especially because it is one of the major natural processes that a woman goes through.”

Paromita suggests..

Ideally resort wear or holiday clothing comes in both natural and comfortable fabrics and silhouettes so it is better if you ‘resort’ to resort wear!
Footwear should be kept as slip-ons or flat brogues which are both comfortable and don’t cause shoe bites.
Ideally a tote bag in natural leather with light basic essentials is better than heavy statement bags with too many dangling accessories.
