Not just a queen in name (she often gets called that, in the Bollywood context) and fame (with reference to the film), Kangana Ranaut now boasts of a portrait created by artist Suvigya Sharma in a queen-like avatar. The artist has previously created artworks for many B-Towners including Rani Mukerji along with a huge list of the who’s who from industry and society circles. Of his association with Kangana, the artist says, “I had done a couple of paintings for her previously. After that, she asked me to do a portrait.”

Royal touch

Says Suvigya, “I told her that since she has been tagged as the queen of the industry and had done the movie, why not paint her in a royal manner. From the very first day, I told her that I wanted a European touch to the artwork. I wanted to make it in a manner that would be very pale, very hazy, nothing too bright. A dull colour-scheme. The one I had made for Rani was very vibrant, this one I wanted a lot paler.” About the portrait, he says, “It’s oil on canvas with real 24-carat gold embossed on the painting. I worked on it at my workshop in Jaipur. The work is at least three or three-and-a-half mm thick, which is as good as something that would be as thick as real jewellery. It measures 3.5 x 2.5 ft. The impact of this painting is powerful.”

A year-long wait

It took almost a year to create the artwork. Suvigya praises Kangana, “It was great collaborating with her. She is fun-loving, very easy-going. She was very patient. She spent six months just looking for a good picture. Then when she found one, she gave me the time I wanted to work with the portrait. Generally, people are in a rush for me to finish their work. They often hurry me up. But Kangana gave me all the time that I wanted to paint. It took me around six months to finish it.”

Worth the hardwork

Suvigya presented Kangana the creation a few days back. “The portrait was ready with me for some time now, but Kangana was busy travelling and working. Finally, recently when she was in Mumbai for two days, Rangoli (Kangana’s sister) called me. That’s when we met. I flew down from Jaipur to give her the portrait.” Suvigya says that Kangana’s reaction on seeing the completed work made it worth all the time that was spent on this artwork. “She was extremely happy. She said, ‘Wow Suvigya, you’ve made me look so beautiful. It looks better than the picture I had given you.’”

Next on the cards

Suvigya is now working on portraits for Sachin Tendulkar’s new bungalow. He reveals, “I am doing three life-size portraits for him — Arjun and him, Sara and him, and Anjali and him.” An exhibition at the Derby is also on the cards. The artist also creates clothes that have gold on them. “In February, I will be launching my clothing line,” he promises.
