Kaifi Azmi passed on May 10, 2002.

Earlier while talking about her father, Shabana Ji stated, "Kaifi Sahab was an optimist. He has been witness to different eras, but never once he lost his faith and that I think was his strength. Also, the defeat of an artiste is the defeat of society because these are the people who carry forward the hope of others."

The veteran actor went on to say, "Kaifi Sahab always considered himself as a worker. Born in Mijwan, Uttar Pradesh when he returned after 40 years and saw its sorry state of affairs, he did a lot of social work there. And so I think his life was quite successful."

She concluded by saying, "He was the protector of Urdu language through his lyrics in Bollywood films, especially after the fall of Urdu language post-partition. So most of his songs are actually poems."
