Hollywood royalty Jennifer Aniston, who has sparked awards talk with her gritty role in Cake, says it was liberating to ditch her glamorous self to play a depressed woman in the movie.

Aniston, who is known for her romantic comedies, received a standing ovation for her latest performance when the film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The 45-year-old actress plays the role of a woman suffering from addiction, rage issues and suicidal depression after a tragic accident leaves her scarred inside and out, reported People magazine. "It's awesome and liberating to let that all go," Aniston said about her role in Cake. "And see yourself looking like that on a 50-foot screen," she added.

The film, which also features Anna Kendrick and Britt Robertson, is set to be released in 2015.
