Aficionados of jazz can look forward to three days of music with some of the best acts during International Jazz Festival edition III at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Debuting this year will be Dal Segño Trio featuring LaToya Smith — a New York outfit that will play traditional jazz standards with a modern flair from the Great American Songbook. Look forward to some swinging rhythms from their set on the opening day of the fest. Also performing will be Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Trio. The saxophonist and vocalist Camille joins the drummer Darrell, debuting music from their Horace Silver tribute project.

On day two, Mandy Gaines Quartet will present a concert of jazz classics from The Great American Songbook, which is a rich blend of jazz and blues along with Gospel influences. The same evening will see Round Midnight Orchestra with Deborah Carter —one of Europe’s hottest bands consisting of established musicians in Dutch jazz mixed with some of Holland’s greatest young jazz talents. They will play exciting music from the golden era of jazz.

Day three will have Yuval Cohen Sextet. Soprano saxophonist Yuval is part of the band The 3 Cohens, with his siblings Anat and Avishai Cohen and is a leading figure of Israeli jazz.

Finally, Mingus Dynasty Quintet will also play their maiden gig in India.

Abraham Burton on tenor saxophone will be accompanied by artistes featured in the 2011 Grammy Award-winning album Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard. The finale includes a jam session of all the musicians at the fest.

Farrahnaz Irani, General Manager, Western Music at NCPA, says, “This season is more vocal-heavy as opposed to our earlier ones. Audiences will experience a journey through old-school jazz, Broadway as well as what it feels like to be part of the New York Jazz scene today. We have Grammy Award Winners and people who have made their mark on the international jazz scene like no other.”

As the NCPA completes 50 years, she added that their first and foremost aim is to present, promote and preserve the performing arts.

When: October 11-13, 6.30 pm

Where: NCPA, Nariman Point, Churchgate
