The first-half of 2013 saw a slew of successful love stories — Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Raanjhanaa, Lootera and Issaq. So much so that the trade pundits had started tauting 2013 as the rom-com year. However, the season of romance seems to have ended, temporarily.

The action began with Nikhil Advani’s D-Day whose stunts were supervised by Hollywood’s Tom Struthers (Blood Diamond, Inception, The Dark Knight, etc).
Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Café, which releases next month, is also high on action.
“In my film, the action doesn’t come like item songs. It is an integral part of the plot,” says Sircar whose earlier film Vickey Donor had no physical aggression except a slap!

Unlike Advani and Sircar, who are new to the action genre, Apoorva Lakhia whose Zanjeer opens on September 6 has been closely associated with physically vibrant cinema. Says Lakhia, “Mission Istaanbul and Shootout At Lokhandwala were both action films. So unlike Shoojit and Nikhil, I am not new to the genre. However, the action in Zanjeer is very different from what I’ve done so far. Ramcharan Teja is an action star. And he does daredevil kind of stunts. So it’s an out-and-out paisa vasool edge-of-the-seat action flick.”

Then there is Rohit ‘car-flying’ Shetty’s Chennai Express and Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara. While both the films are at heart powerful dramas, the action quotient is very high, especially for Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express. Seems the audiences will have to get ready for some kick-ass action, and give the Romeo And Juliet a break till Valentine’s.
