Item songs have brought just not me — but the films that I am attached to —  name and fame. In fact, I started the trend and I feel nice to still be on the top with the trend,” is how Meghna Naidu justifies her move of agreeing to do an item number in director Chaitanya’s Parari even as she is essaying a full fledged role in Sikapatte Ishta Patte.

“Sikappate... is a woman centric film. It’s a thriller and stars four other girls in lead roles. I play myself in the film. At this point this is all I can divulge. It’s an interesting concept. I have a feeling my song in Parari is also going to be equally interesting. Some dancers will be sporting the costumes of aghoris in this number,” says Meghna. The song will be shot in Melkote and Harsha has been roped in to choreograph the foot tapping number. Shubha Mudgal is likely to sing the song. Getting back to Meghna, we agree when she says item songs are a norm these days. But does she feel insecure over the fact that the leading ladies themselves are these days game for doing these steamy numbers?

“Like I said earlier, I am happy that I started the trend and that heroines today call directors and ask to be considered for item songs.” When it comes to Kannada, leading ladies like Pooja Gandhi (Director’s Special), Charmee (Yaare Kugaadali), Aindrita Ray (Prem Adda), Neethu (Metro), Suman Ranganathan (Jinke Mari) have all done item songs for upcoming films. The likes of Ramya and Ragini have sizzled in such numbers in their own films. Sanjjanaa, Nikitha, Rishika Singh and Romanita Chaudhary have also upped the heat in special numbers.

“I don’t see why people would not want to do item numbers. I think it’s totally cool to be doing them. Whether the film is a hit or a flop, the song is sure to catch attention. If anything they present you with a win-win situation,” says Meghna before heading off to Dubai, where she has started an academy to promote what she does best — dance!
