The Twitterati was abuzz with chatter, as the Bengali film industry, led by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, was up in arms regarding the release of the Hindi Medium trailer and its inherent similarities to their 2014 Bengali film Ramdhanu. Apart from Mukherjee himself, other industry members like Gargee Roychowdhury, Abir Chatterjee and Prosenjit Chatterjee also chimed in to chastise the Irrfan Khan-starrer for lifting the plot of the acclaimed Bengali movie.
As reported earlier, the producer of Ramdhanu is planning to move to court accusing the makers of the movie for copyright infringement. Mukherjee also made a motion to take action against the release of the movie by appealing to Mukesh Bhatt, the Producer of the Film and Television Producers Guild of India, as far back as October 4 of 2016.
Now, Hindi Medium director Saket Chaudary has finally spoken up about the controversy in an official statement. Instead of outwardly denying any form of plagiarism, he appealed to his audiences to not rush to conclusions by saying that the film was conceived long back and to judge by watching the film itself. “We have researched our script over a year and it is based on original material. I would request everyone involved to not rush to a judgement without ascertaining the facts. And the facts can easily be confirmed by watching Hindi Medium on 12th May” said Chaudary.
The director also reinstated the message of the movie about education and language in our society. “Hindi Medium is a story about how education that is supposed to be a tool of enlightenment has become a tool to create inequality. This inequality is created on the basis of English schools versus regional language schools, private schools versus government schools.”
Hindi Medium will be released to theatres on May 12. Coincidentally, Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s next venture Posto also comes out in theatres May 12.
