International Dance Day: 'Natyam' showcases a woman's love for dance

The much-anticipated short film Natyam by writer and director Revanth has been put out on YouTube on the occasion of International Dance day today. Natyam is a tale of a talented married woman Kalyani’s dream that would have faded away if not for her grit to pursue it. The movie is about her journey to attain excellence in the art of Kuchipudi dance that she loves the most. Director Revanth and the leading lady of the film Kuchipudi artiste Sandhya Raju along with G Madhusudhan, General Manager, Kirtilal Jewellers addressed the media post the preview of the movie on Thursday in Hyderabad.

All the actors have done a commendable job in the film, which has many absorbing moments between the actors. Sandhya Raju is convincing as the beautiful, passionate Kuchipudi artiste Kalyani. The viewers will certainly not able to take their eyes off her debut performance as an actor. As Kalyani, she portrays the internal conflict between external comforts and the thirst to pursue her inner passion perfectly. She flawlessly sinks into the role and transforms herself into this mythical Kuchipudi beauty while her co-star adapted well to his role as a husband who is determined to make his wife’s dream come true.  

“As an artiste, I feel Natyam will inspire many women who relate to the role played in the film by me. What brings joy to me is that the film is being showcased to the world on the eve of International Dance Day. It is a compelling tribute to a great art and its revival,” says Sandhya Raju.

Young filmmaker Revanth must be given credit for being creative and to tell a new story that highlights marital conflicts of an aspiring artist. Natyam is about dreaming and turning your dream into reality. What is 'Natyam' about? 

Natyam revolves around the central character named Kalyani. She is a married woman who gets occupied by the responsibilities that a marriage brings into her life and gives up her passion to dance post marriage.  

It’s a story that depicts the internal conflict between external comforts and a thirst for her passion. She communicates these conflicts with her father through letters. Accidentally one day she encounters a remembrance from the past that encourages her to pursue her passion again.

In this process, she has to discover her old self in her new life which takes her into a new revelation of the impact that dance has, not just to her life but her happiness. Does she have enough perseverance to follow her passion? Does she communicate this new revelation with her dad? Natyam captures this interesting journey of Kalyani and answers these questions.

Who is director Revanth Korukonda?
 
Revanth Korukonda is a budding filmmaker who believes movies are a strong medium to showcase compelling, inspiring stories that carry a strong social message. His quest as a film maker is to excel in introducing genre that are inspirational, thought provoking and are driven by very subtle and sensitive emotions.  As a child, he was mesmerised by the art of storywriting which eventually transformed into a passion for movie direction. He followed his passion with a master’s degree in filmmaking from University of Missouri –Columbia. He returned to Hyderabad and worked as an assistant director for two years while creating innovative short films that became very popular on YouTube.

Who is Sandhya Raju?

Sandhya Raju is a young Kuchipudi artiste who represents the next generation of Indian classical dancers. With 12 years of training under Gurus Padma Bhushan Vempati Chinna Satyam and Kishore Mosalikanti and eight years of performing experience, Sandhya has been giving solo and group recitals across India and abroad. Her pinnacle role was that of Lord Krishna in the dance drama ‘Gopika Krishna’ choreographed by Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. Apart from teaching at Nishrinkala, Sandhya also owns and manages Barefoot Dance Company in Hyderabad.
 
Why a movie on dance?
Wanting to excel in the field of creative filmmaking, Revanth wants to introduce movies that focus on strong inspiring human personalities using the independent movie landscape on YouTube. Natyam is movie that evokes similar emotions in the likes of yesteryear’s cult classics like 'Swarnakamalam' and 'Sankarabaranam'.
