Director Sandeep Malani can’t wait to celebrate this occasion through his ambitious project, Filmalani 100.

Indian cinema turns 100 next April and director Sandeep Malani can’t wait to celebrate this occasion through his ambitious project, Filmalani 100. “I am someone who has loved watching and making films. So it was only natural for me to think of paying tribute to this industry that is reaching a milestone. Through Filmalani 100, I plan to recreate the 100 most popular scenes of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films,” he says.

Scenes from Hindi films Sholay, Mughal-E-Azam, Mr India, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Amar Akbar Anthony and  Lagaan among several others will be a part of the film. A scene from either Bandhana, Nannina Mareyalare or Prema Loka, his favourite Kannada films will also be recreated. “I have a strong Kannada connection. I lived in Karnataka and thus grew up watching Kannada films. I have even directed Kannada films and my most recent Hindi film, Jaanleva 555 even stars popular Kannada actor Ananth Nag,” he adds. A scene each from a hit Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film will also be included in Sandeep’s film. Song bits from these films will also be used.

With the scenes and songs having been selected, Sandeep is now thinking of beginning the casting process. “The film will require the participation of 500 actors. Auditions will be held in  Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. I will go in for an all new star cast and big names will be used only to promote the film,” he says. Given his proximity to actor Sridevi and his admiration for her, does he plan to rope her in for the promotions or a special role? “The film centres around four film making students, who set out to make a documentary on Indian films. So we require a young cast. But yes, there will be a ‘suthradhar’ in the film and I am thinking of casting a star in that role. As for Sridevi, I’m a huge fan of hers and will soon be making a documentary on her life too. I plan to release it on her birthday next year,” is all he says not wanting to reveal anything more about Filmalani 100. Guess we have to wait till April 21, 2013 to find out after all!
