It has been decades since India attained freedom from British colonial rule, a movement that produced several national heroes and well as several stories of courage by common people. Our cinema has captured many these stories and their struggle for freedom, that never fail to evoke a sense of patriotism.

Raising a toast on account of our 68th Independence Day, we list down 7 Bollywood films that explored the battles, the struggles and the series of events that surrounded India's momentous freedom movement.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising:

History has it that it was this Indian sepoy who sparked a rebellion against the British, way back in 1857. The film captured the circumstances and events that led to India's First War of Independence .

Hey Ram:

One of the more controversial films to be made, Hey Ram tells the story behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh:

Bhagat Singh was a true revolutionary but was never given a farewell fit for a martyr. The Legend of Bhagat Singh starts with Bhagat Singh's death and how the British wanted to dispose off his body. The film brilliantly brought out Bhagat Singh's contributions to the Indian freedom movement.

Shaheed:

Shaheed also traces the contributions of Bhagat Singh and how he fought valiantly for the country's Independence from the British.

Bose: The Forgotten Hero:

Subhash Chandra Bose's life and his activities during the freedom struggle form the crux of this absorbing film.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se:

This Ashutosh Gowariker drama is set at the backdrop of the Chittagong uprising in the 1930s with Abhishek Bachchan playing Surya Sen on screen. However,  the film did not completely succeed in striking a chord with the audience.

Lagaan:

Set in the Victorian period of the British colonial rule, Lagaan, although an epic sports drama, captured the trials and tribulations that a common man in India had to go through due to the tax system prevalent in that era.
