Shahid Kapoor was one of the first actors to do a dance film — long before ABCD and ABCD 2 came along. His Chance Pe Dance revolved around dance. But it didn’t pay off. The genre wasn’t as popular back then when Shahid did the film. Now, with the success of the ABCD franchise, Shahid feels there’s an audience for such films.

One more chance

A fantastic dancer himself, he is now ready to take another ‘chance’ on ‘dance’.  He admits, “I would love to do a dance film now. I hope I can dance well enough though because people are doing such a good job today with their dancing. I guess CPD didn’t work because it was a bad film. The ones that are made now are better. So there’s no wrong or right time to make a film. You should make a film well and if you do that, people will like it. Dance is a very exciting space and there’s a huge audience for that. So yes, definitely, the audience has grown now. There’s more awareness and excitement about dance now. There are more people wanting to dance than maybe six-seven years back. You make a good film in any genre and it should work.

My favs

When asked to name the best dancers in Bollywood, he says, “Hrithik Roshan and Prabhu Dheva are amazing. Govinda is out of the world.”
He shoots down reports of doing a film with Prabhu Dheva for Balaji Motion Pictures, “ Yeh kisne bola! There’s never been such a film in place. I don’t know about it.”

Interested, but unsure

Another genre that he is interested in is biopics. “I’ve been wanting to do a biopic for quite some time. I enjoyed watching a few recently and it could be really interesting for me to take it up. But I can’t pick anyone who I think I could play on screen.”

Thoda intezaar

About Rangoon getting pushed to a later date, he says, “We have wrapped up the film. Everything is done. And I was expecting Vishal Bhardwaj to release it on October 2 itself because it’s his favourite release day. But it’s a big film, so there’s a lot of post-production involved. Hence, they decided to shift the release and now, we are coming on February 24, for sure.”

Fluffy next

After two dark films back-to-back, is he planning to go into a lighter space? He shakes his head, “I don’t know. But, hopefully, my next film will not be similar to Udta and Rangoon. I might try out a light-hearted, fluffy film. I actually see a lot of people making a lot of films inspired from the past. Waisa kuch karte hain and I don’t understand that. You need to do something new to be original.”
