Tootey Khaab is not just a single for Rangon Chatterjee but a year-long soulful journey that he learnt a lot from. Rendered by Armaan Malik, Rangon composed the track with Kunaal Vermaa, who also penned it. The duo had several jam sessions with the vocalist. “I believe, Armaan is one of the finest musicians we have. His involvement in every song makes all of them special. We put in all our inputs in the song. In all, it took a year for Tootey Khaab to get its structure to what you are listening now. Armaan gave his magical touch to it,” says Rangon, also giving the credit to its programmer Sourav Roy and mix engineer Eric Pillai.

Rangon emphasises it’s not just a break-up song. “It has a strong message of moving on and doing the things you do the best,” he points out, and states, “I have put my soul into and lived Tootey Khaab for a year.”

THE BACK STORY

Rangon started learning to sing from his uncle when he was in class two. The Kolkata lad then joined piano classes and went on to play with a number of bands, mostly rock. When I was about to appear for my board exams, a friend asked me to give music for a theatre piece he was doing. I had previously composed about four songs but this was the first time I was composing for a project, and it got immense appreciation. That’s how I started making music more often, along with singing and playing the piano as well as guitar,” he recalls.

This led to him working on his music production skills along with Bengali albums and films. “I was Facebook friends with Kunaal and we had worked on some projects in the past. In December 2016, I met him in Mumbai when I came here to record with Javed Ali for a Bengali movie. Kunaal liked my work and asked me to move here. I did that and started working here,” he states. Since then, he’s had projects like Phir Mulaaqat in Why Cheat India, Tere Rubaroo and Naa Samajh with Akki Singh.

ALSO WORKING ON

Rangon has several collaborations coming up apart from a movie, Saiyoni, which has two songs by him. “There are also some web series, including a special Bengali one, which has my first-ever horror song sung by Sukriti Kakar. I’m coming up with my debut Hindi single this year, hopefully by December,” he signs off.
