Ed Sheeran’s performance in India as part of the Asian Tour 2017 was a gig to remember. Before he took the stage, singer-songwriter and music producer Lauv (real name Ari Staprans Leff) won hearts with his wistful tunes. From being an opening act, Lauv is now on his own Asian Tour and he performed in the city on May 13. The I Like Me Better hitmaker enthused, “It’s an absolute dream come true. I got to come here with Ed for the first time and those shows were crazy. I got to learn a lot by just watching him perform. I feel really lucky to be doing it for my own show with my own world and vibe. I’m just super stoked.” For Lauv, 2018 began with a world tour that was sold out and he hopes the same happens with this one, too. “But, I try not to pay too much attention to all that and just try to make music.”

While in Mumbai, he sampled the food here, including a spicy wrap, and also visited Marine Drive as well as Mani Bhavan in Gamdevi. “I’ve just been walking around and exploring,” he tells us.

BLUE THOUGHTS

Apart from wowing the audiences with his music, Lauv is known for carrying a My Blue Thoughts box in which he asks his fans to put notes on anything they want, and he records them on his blog. He brought it along this time, as well. “It’s very cathartic for everyone involved,” he points out, adding about himself, “I have a place for myself to put my thoughts at. Sometimes there’s so much stuff in your head that it feels a bit crazy and you don’t know what to do with it. It’s great to let it out somewhere and it shouldn’t have to mean so much or hold you back.” His track Superhero is inspired by one such note from a fan.

A LONG JOURNEY

Lauv, who has mega-popular tracks such as I’m so Tired with pop sensation Troy Sevan, began his musical journey as a student whose shows wouldn’t even get an audience. He then interned at a studio where artistes such as Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Alicia Keys recorded and finally became an electro-pop star. “It’s been such a long time and so many stages. I try to keep having fun, being real and not take it too seriously. That’s the only way it makes sense to me and should for anyone else,” he says about his journey.

UPCOMING MUSIC

The In a Different Way (with DJ Snake) singer is currently working on his record, How I’m Feeling. “I will be putting out the songs one by one throughout the year. For now, I’m choosing from about 50 songs and writing more. I’m just trying to figure out which songs are best for the story,” he tells us. Lauv is self-confessedly constantly inspired by Coldplay’s lead vocalist Chris Martin. Now that he’s a sensation, is he inching closer towards a collaboration with his idol? “Putting the thought out in the Universe is likely to make it come true. That’s got to happen before I die, for sure. I would be super-nervous but it will be really fun,” he signs off.
