Sunidhi Chauhan tells Soumyadipta Banerjee that she doesn’t want be a part of any reality show

Good looks and a perfect signing voice. Twenty four years of age with a professional experience of nine years. Down-to-earth despite winning all the major awards in the country for playback singing.

These are rare combinations by any standards and somehow it suits Sunidhi Chauhan just fine.  “I don’t want to consider myself a veteran or a senior in the industry. I am just 24 years old ya! I have not done half of the things that I want to do in my life,” says Sunidhi in her usual chirpy self.

The singer has promised her dad that she’s going to come out with a pop album by this year. “I have already started seriously thinking about the album and will soon talking to a music director about it,” says Sunidhi.

The first winner of the first singing contest on television, Sunidhi however recoils with the very mention of the word ‘reality show’.

“I refuse to admit that I am a product of a reality show. I never begged the audience with folded hands for SMS votes, please don’t put me into that typecast,” says the singer.

Even though you sparingly saw her on a couple of reality show episodes as a judge, Sunidhi insists that she will never be a part of the reality show bandwagon. “You will never see me in any of the reality shows. I am not a part of it,” she hastens to add.

So, is Sunidhi a little worried by the number of singers this reality show biz is churning out every season? “Absolutely not!

It’s good to see competition and I am glad that our industry is getting to see so many talented performers. I must say that the real struggle starts after you put your foot in the industry. You will have to hang on there and whether you are able to do that is something to watch out for,” she says.

We then decide to confront her with the criticism that she’s uncomfortable with classical music as she doesn’t have any formal training in music.

“It’s true that I have not sung any classical song, but you will see me singing a lot of semi-classical in my forthcoming movies like ‘Rang Rasiya’.

I am also throwing a challenge at you, just give me a few months of riyaz and I will be able to sing a purely classical song. I might be uncomfortable at first but that doesn’t mean I won’t be able to do it.”

Well that’s typical of Sunidhi. And we got something so not typical when we asked her if she’s seeing somebody. There came a very mild “No” after a very brief pause and then she adds, “I want to settle down and get married in another two years time,” she signs off.
