He is a superstar, has the money, all the fame and leads a life that anybody would envy, but Kane aka Glenn Thomas Jacobs often wishes he could steal some time off and spend more time at home with his family. “As a wrestling superstar, I have lived a life people would be envious of. But in real, I’m a pretty private and boring person who is trying to enjoy life and be happy with family. My wife always wishes that I could spare more time back home. I work out almost five days a week and when I’m not doing that, I’m in the ring — I hardly get time to go home and spend time with them. But when I’m home, I just want to be there with my daughters all the time. I guess that’s the only challenge I face in playing Kane,” shares the WWE superstar, who also confesses that his daughters are not his greatest fans. “As kids they used to watch the show and loved it too. I was their fave superstar. But now they are grownups and though they still sometimes watch the show, they think I’m not cool enough. Fame doesn’t impress them anymore,” smiles Kane.
He comes from a family with an air force background and has been an English literature student himself. So how did he end up being in the ring? “Since my childhood I loved wrestling and have been a huge fan. When I went to college, I thought I’d be good because I had all the right tools to be a wrestler and thought it was fun. And it is,” says Kane, who thinks life always has plans for you. “It happens to all of us. We plan something and end up doing something entirely different. At this point, when I turn back and think, I don’t know if I would have come this far if I had taken up something else,” he adds.
And now Jacobs is living and loving every moment in the ring. “It has become my life. I get to see all sorts of different cultures and have the fortune of working with not just wrestlers but the entertainers of the industry — actors, musicians, and sportspersons. It has given me great exposure and fans who are passionate and loyal,” says the wrestler, who was in the city to promote the show.
Kane who has been given nicknames like The Big Red Machine, The Big Red Monster and The Devil’s Favourite Demon, is best known for his Chokeslam and the red mask. “My fave nickname is The Big Red Machine; a name also given to the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. And Chokeslam is the move I stole from Undertaker,” chuckles Kane, who is very comfortable wearing his mask. “There are different versions of the mask, but I find the latex one a lot easier. Happy, sad or ugly within, the mask signifies what we all wear in life to hide what’s within us,” he adds.
Living and playing Kane most of the time, does it ever come in the way of who Jacobs is? “I have never felt that way. Kane is just a character, like a role an actor would play in a film. And I love to play Kane because he is an interesting character, who gets to do all the bad stuff that we all want to without going to jail!,” expresses Kane, adding, “And the fact that Kane’s moves are unpredictable is what makes him popular among the crowd as well. People spend good money to watch us, so my moto is to give my best and entertain them to the fullest.”
WWE continues to hold sway among most men, and not just teenagers. “The show has a lot of common elements like a soap opera. With a storyline, characters and a plot, it’s just drama which has been integrated with a lot of action. So, it’s more like an action-adventure soap opera,” explains Kane, who has no plans to retire anytime soon. “I’m at the peak of my career; having a lot of fun and I’ll continue doing it as long as I can. I see no reason to quit at the moment,” he says confidently. But given that he has done a few movies, what if he gets an offer? “It’s fun to do movies and maybe I will try, but it’s not like I want to be a movie star,” signs off Kane.
