Arjun Kanungo has just released the follow-up to his last single Aaya Na Tu (feat Momina Mustehsan). In Tu Na Mera, not only has he strayed from club hits that he is famed for but has also given a music video with powerful storytelling. Arjun says it was challeng-ing to be part of the larger-than-life narrative of a commando and his love story. “It takes a lot more effort,” he explains, adding, “But it’s worth it in the end. I strongly believe that this is the future of the music video — concept and story will play a big part in keeping the audiences interested.”

II GOING GLOOMY

To essay the role of the commando, the artiste hit the gym and learnt martial arts. Other than that, “I trained in stunts for three weeks and with guns for a couple of weeks,” he adds and tells us that he has been around the weapon his whole life. “I was a national gold medal winner twice for centre fire pistol in my teenage years, before making music my focus,” he elaborates. While Aaya Na Tu was about rejection and pain, this one is about unrequited love. Arjun has so far made a name with club hits such as Gallan Tipsiyan, Baaki Baatein Peene Ke Baad and more. Did the shift come easily to him? “Every artiste has both sides to them. It’s the part of yourself you choose to explore at that moment. This side came to me naturally. I love writing and singing ballads,” he says.

II MORE FILM SONGS THIS YEAR

Even though Khoon Choos Le (Go Goa Gone) was Arjun’s breakthrough number as a singer, one hasn’t heard any more from him after that. He states, “I think non-film music was more my comfort zone. But I plan to change that this year. I have a song in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, which comes out this month.” As for collaborations, after Momina and Neha Kakkar (La La La), one can look forward to more from him, though he cannot talk about them yet.

II ACTING ON HIS MIND

Right now, he is focussing on Tu Na Mera and will next be seen in an episode of MTV Unplugged that comes out on January 26. Arjun also has acting on his mind and was seen in the web series Sidehero recently. “I’m working on another digital show,” he informs us. “I’m in talks for films as well but can’t share details right now,” he concludes.
