Censorboard member Nandini Sardesai has leveled charges of authoritarian and unauthorized conduct during the reivision committee's censor certification of Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet against Pahlaj Nihalani, the chairperson of the Censorboard. Nihalani responds to the charges

The charge: Being high-handed
Pahlaj Nihalani
: I've said this before and I say it again. I am not answerable to board members. They are answerable to me. I am answerable to the Information & Broadcasing ministry. Nothing at the censorboard is being done without the knowledge of the Ministry.

The charge: Films are delayed
PN
: From the time I've taken taken over as chairperson I've made sure that not one film is delayed or cut unnecessarily. Every single film since I came in, has been viewed and judged according to specific requirement. I've made sure all films, promos and trailers are certified without delay.

The charge: Producers are unhappy
PN
: I am a film producer myself with more than 40 years of experience. I am still making films. I know every producer and his problems. In what capacity is she talking of producer's problems? How does she know what the producers have to go through? I know what it is like to go through release delays. I'd make sure no film gets delayed at the censor board.

The charge: Ignored colleagues' inputs.
PN
: I am completely within my rights to induct the panel members for the Revision Committee. Yes, this person did ask me several times that she would like to be on the RC for Bombay Velvet. Her keen interest in re-viewing the film made me wonder. I chose the members of the RC keeping in mind the guidelines applicable to the film and what is best for the film .It isn't mandatory for me to appoint a particular board member to see a film just because he or she wants to watch it.

The charge: Decisions taken unilaterally.
PN
: I am doing nothing unconstitutional. I am not going to report all my moves to my board members or to the media. I'd like to tell my board members that expressing internal grievances in the CBFC on public platforms is a complete breach of protocol Only Mr Shravan Kumar the CEO of the CBFC is supposed to act as our spokesperson. Others are speaking out of line. Take away my job. I'll happily give it up. But you can't take away my dedication to my responsibilities and duties as the chairperson of the censor board as long as I am here. And I am always accessible to hear grievances. If some elements still want to create a noise let them have their fun. I am not going to be cowed down.
