After watching a national award winning film like Aadukalam, we, like most Tamil cinema fans, were left wondering what director Vetrimaaran would come up with next. His trip to Bangalore made our lives simpler; we got to ask him questions in person.

NH4, which is the first film being produced under my banner, is being shot in the city and that’s why I came to Bangalore,” begins Vetrimaaran. While the script is his, the film is being directed by one of his associates, Manigandhan. Starring Siddharth, the film is being made in Tamil and Telugu. “I must tell you that NH4 was going to be my first directorial venture and with Dhanush as the lead. But at that point things didn’t fall into place and Dhanush and I went on to do Polladhavan and Aadukalam instead. So naturally I am quite happy that NH4 is being finally made,” says the director.

Does that mean he will now be able to concentrate totally on Vada Chennai, which is speculated to be his next big one with Dhanush? “That film has been shelved. But I am planning another one with Dhanush. It might take some time as I am aiming at an international release this time. I also want to send it to festivals,” he adds.

Given that he is planning to target the global audience this time, will he do away with the nativity factor his films are known for? “I believe that for our content to be perceived as international, we have to remain as ethnic and rooted as possible. All that I am aiming for right now is to make a better film than Aadukalam. I feel that so far, I have made only ordinary films; I have to improve,” says the director, in all modesty.

Who else apart from Dhanush is he considering for the film — anyone from the Kannada film industry? “It’s too early for me to say anything on that now. But in NH4, Ramya will be making a friendly appearance. She had come to the sets to meet me and this being my maiden production venture, I thought it would be nice if she had a special appearance given that she was the one to play the lead in Polladhavan,” he says. Any plans of venturing into Kannada films? “I haven’t thought about it yet. I take one step at a time and take things as they come. I am very lazy!” ends Vetrimaaran.
