Parineeti Chopra has dubbed for the first time for Steven Spielberg’s fantasy-adventure The BFG’s Hindi version. The film is about a young orphaned girl named Sophie who befriends a Big Friendly Giant. Pari talks to us about the experience...

What made you say yes?
I was excited the moment Phantom and Reliance called me over to come and watch the film. Apart from it being Spielberg’s next, The BFG, is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I love Spielberg’s work and I just jumped at the chance to be his heroine. The plot revolves only around two characters — the BFG and Sophie and a character played by Gulshan Grover. Also, I had the chance to work with Amitabh Bachchan (who voices the BFG). Who gets all these opportunities?

Did you do voice modulation to get the voice of a child?
That was the biggest thing to achieve. I have a husky, distinctive voice, but I had to sound like a 12-year girl. The giant spends most of his time with this little girl. Of course, apart from the sounds and visuals, I was helped a great deal by professional voice artist Mona Shetty, who was always there to guide us and tell us how to make things better, especially if she felt I was not sounding like a 12-year-old girl. The best thing is that when The BFG trailer came out, I got many messages from people saying my voice sounds different, which is what I was trying to achieve in the first place.

Between singing and dubbing, which do you prefer now?
There is no comparison really because singing is my love. I wouldn’t exchange this. Dubbing was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Mr Bachchan is a genius at what he does and to achieve that bar, was tough. I had to make sure I could do even one per cent of what he did.

Recently, there was an issue about stars taking away jobs from dubbing artists.
Really? I have not heard about this, so I can’t comment. All I know is that I loved the experience of dubbing. It took me three days to do it and now I am missing it. It’s been an amazing experience and I am proud to be part of such an amazing group of artists. I hope Spielberg watches and likes what I have done. His team was down here giving feedback to him in LA. I will treasure this memory all my life. How many Indian actresses can say that they were a Steven Spielberg heroine?
