On Monday, one of CBS' longest running and most popular shows, 'How I Met Your Mother' ended its nine year run. There were several theories about how the iconic series would close, but although fans did predict the ending, they could not believe they were right. The last five minutes revealed that the mother (Cristin MIlioti) became sick, and it was actually dead for six years while the main character Ted Mosby was telling his kids the story of how he met her. The kids then deduced that Ted had been subconsciously trying to get their permission to ask their aunt Robin out on a date. This revelation pretty much broke the internet. Fan reaction to the ending was mixed, but was leaning more to the negative side.
Co-creator Craig Thomas decided to take to Twitter and respond to the backlash.
"Thank you all. I mean it: Every possible reaction to the last 44 minutes...thank you all...#HIMYM," he wrote. "The fact that we have been a tv sitcom that has received this much passion from fans, for 9 years (not just tonight) -- thank you."
Seriously - no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU...you were with us. We love you.

In subsequent tweets he posted, "We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us. #HIMYM," and "We did a finale about life's twists and turns and that is not always what happens...but THANKS!"
