Tareefan from Veere Di Wedding has had you grooving. Now, meet its composer, QARAN. Though he came up with the composition on a flight from Mumbai to Delhi, the music producer and DJ admits that he is super hard on himself when it comes to melodies. “However, when I got the basic melody for Tareefan, I knew it would work. My acid test is waking up the following day and singing the song constantly. Generally that means it’s a hit. And I woke up singing Tareefan,” he states.
More work to follow
The success of Tareefan has encouraged QARAN about his live act and career as a film music composer. “Bringing a new sound in Bollywood is a risk but to see it being widely accepted gives me conviction for upcoming projects,” he says. Right enough, he has more Bollywood songs coming up and he will soon drop two singles that he is reluctant to share the titles of. “They are in the urban space and have an international sound. Though they are different from each other, there is a consistency between them,” he adds. “I try to keep my songs a reflection of myself. I have been born and raised abroad and a huge part of my personality is an expat but like they say, phir bhi dil hai Hindustani. The two merge in an organic way and that shows in my music,” he explains.
The big Bolly break
Shankar Ehsaan Loy gave QARAN a break in Bollywood as a music producer and arranger with Sarfira in Katti Batti. Pritam (Dilwale) was another composer he worked with early on in his career. “They have shaped my musicality and commercial sensibilities,” says the DJ who started spinning music when he was just 15. As for dealing with pressure, he states, “It’s a cliché that you’re only as good as your last hit. I’m making sure to stay one step ahead. Though Tareefan has done well, I’m not resting on my laurels. I’m already focused on my singles and an album that will come out soon.”
