The concept of online gift registries is gradually catching on with young couples in Mumbai.

Nearly a decade ago, the world woke up to the infinite possibilities of the internet. And through the years, the online community has been introducing people to concepts that are modern and different. For occasions like weddings, baby showers, birthdays and even Raksha Bandhan, the concept of gift registries is still in its nascent stage in India.

Trusha Shah of shareurjoy.com says that this particular concept, is more for the younger generation. “The concept of gift registry is targeted at the Facebook and Twitter generation, who use the online medium to share and tell people what they feel and want,” she says. People who use this option are the kind of users who have lived abroad or have relatives there, where this concept is very popular, she says. Candice Pereira of marrymeweddings.in agrees and adds that the concept of a gift registry is most useful for young couples who are building a home of their own. “A gift registry is the natural choice for a situation like this. Today, we have a lot of options in terms of home ware and décor and women as always are very involved and interested in setting up and designing their homes,” she says. Also, rather than receiving unnecessary items that the couple may already have or not want, it’s best to actually shortlist your ‘wish list’ and receive items that you actually need and will definitely use, she adds.

Considering this is still a very novel concept to India, Priyanka Agarwal of wishberry.in thought of introducing something different. “Although we started with the idea of a gift registry website, because of the cultural stigma and the fact that people are not ready yet for a concept like this, what we currently provide is an option to donate money to a charity under their name during occasions. So instead of gifting items, you can opt for this,” she says. The website is also going to introduce the option of gifting an investment (like mutual funds, gold etc) to their loved one during occasions. Candice adds that this concept is getting popular among people who prefer a ‘no gifts’ option for weddings.
