Veteran playwright, theatre director and actor Habib Tanvir died aged 85 after a brief illness in Bhopal on Monday.

Tanvir was admitted to hospital a month ago with breathing difficulties. His family, who were at his bedside when he died, said his funeral will take place on Tuesday. He is survived by daughter Nageen.
Born on September 1, 1923, at Raipur in Madhya Pradesh, Tanvir began his career as a journalist and went on to become a playwright. He wrote popular plays like Agra Bazar and Charandas Chor (1974) and won several prestigious Indian and international awards for his work.
Tanvir founded Naya Theatre with wife Moneeka Mishra in 1959, thus giving Hindi theatre a completely new direction. Besides directing over 50 plays, Tanvir acted in a number of them with Balraj Sahani, Dina Pathak and Mohan Sahgal.
Anup Ranjan Pandey, Tanvir’s long-time associate from Raipur, described him as “a talented all-rounder with a modest background”.
Tanvir was also part of Indian People’s Theatre Association and Progressive Writers Association during his days in Mumbai.
He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969, Padma Shri in 1983, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1996, and the Padma Bhushan in 2002.
Charandas Chor got him the the Fringe Firsts Award at Edinburgh International Drama Festival in 1982. He was also nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha from 1972 to 1978. In 2006, the French government conferred upon him the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest French honour for artistes.
His friends and associates from various fields have descended upon the Madhya Pradesh capital to attend his funeral.
