The race is pretty tight when  it comes to small screen section of the 72nd Golden Globes awards. Premium cable network HBO's raunchy female coming-of-age series Girls was the only returning contender for best television comedy or musical, which left out previous broadcast network category staples such as ABC sitcom Modern Family and CBS's nerd comedy The Big Bang Theory. This is Amazon Studios' first crack into major awards as it ramps up its original programming to compete with the likes of Netflix in online video streaming.

Here our favourites to win this year-

Best Television Series - Drama

Nominees

The Affair Showtime
Downton Abbey PBS
Game of Thrones HBO
The Good Wife CBS
House of Cards Netflix

Our pick: House of Cards. When True Detective didn't even make the cut, it became a unanimous decision. The Affair was a close second but we feel Showtime's baby needs to go long.
Winner in 2014: Breaking Bad

Best Actress in Television Series - Drama

Nominees
Claire Danes – Homeland
Viola Davis – How to Get Away with Murder
Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife
Ruth Wilson – The Affair
Robin Wright – House of Cards

Our pick: Viola Davis for How to Get Away with Murder. Defending champion Robin Wright (House of Cards) has tough competition in this Oscar nominated star. How to Get Away with Murder took television by storm this year. You can't expect anything less from Shonda Rhimes, can you?
Winner in 2014: Robin Wright – House of Cards

Best Actor in Television Series - Drama

Nominees

Clive Owen - The Knick
Liev Schreiber - Ray Donovan
Kevin Spacey - House of Cards
James Spader - The Black List
Dominic West - The Affair

Our pick: Kevin Spacey for House of Cards. With Bryan Cranston finally out of the way, we are predicting this will be Spacey's year. Clive Owen comes close with The Knick.
Winner in 2014: Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad

Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical

Girls - HBO
Jane the Virgin - CW
Orange is the New Black - Netflix
Silicon Valley - HBO
Transparent- Amazon Studios

Our pick: Orange is the New Black. Amazon Studios stepped into the fray this year with Transparent and has succeeded in creating a lot of buzz. But Netflix has paved its way to break into the big boys club and Orange is the New Black deserves this one.
Winner in 2014: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Best Actress in Television series - Comedy or Musical

Nominees

Lena Dunham – Girls
Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie
Gina Rodriguez – Jane the Virgin
Julia Louis Dreyfuss – Veep
Taylor Schilling – Orange Is the New Black

Our pick: Gina Rodriguez for Jane the Virgin. Jane the Virgin is a story of a young, devout woman who discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated. It may fall short when it comes to series win, but leading lady Gina Rodriguez looks promising over Emmy favourite Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Winner in 2014: Amy Poehler

Best Actor in Television Series - Comedy or Musical

Nominees

Don Cheadle – House of Lies
Ricky Gervais – Derek
Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent
Louis CK – Louie
William H. Macy – Shameless

Our pick: Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent. This was a close call between William H Macy for Shameless and Jeffrey Tambor. We don't see Golden Globes making peace with Ricky Gervais anytime soon, so no candy for Derek.
Winner in 2014: Andy Samberg

Best Mini-Series or TV movie

Nominees

Fargo
The Missing
True Detective
The Normal Heart
Olive Kitteridge

True Detective. This might be a very close call between The Normal Heart and True Detective. With The Normal Heart winning Emmys, the race has gotten a bit tough for the latter. Fargo could be the underdog here.
Winner in 2014: Behind the Candelabra

Best Actress Mini-Series or TV Movie

Nominees

Maggie Gyllenhaal - The Honorable Woman
Jessica Lange - American Horror Story: Freak Show
Frances McDormand - Olive Kitteridge
Frances O’Connor - The Missing
Allison Tolman - Fargo

Our pick: Frances McDormand for Olive Kitteridge. Jessica Lange has a tough competition here. Olive Kitteridge's story spans 25 years and focuses on Olive's relationships with her husband, Henry, the good-hearted and kindly town pharmacist.
Winner in 2014: Elisabeth Moss

Best Actor Mini-Series or TV Movie

Nominees

Martin Freeman - Fargo
Woody Harrelson - True Detective
Matthew McConaughey - True Detective
Mark Ruffalo - The Normal Heart
Billy Bob Thornton - Fargo

Our pick: Matthew MaConaughey for True Detective. Alright, alright, alright. Unanimous vote.
Winner in 2014: Michael Douglas

Best Supporting Actress

Uzo Aduba – Orange is the New Black
Kathy Bates – American Horror Story: Freak Show
Joanne Froggatt – Downton Abbey
Allison Janney – Mom
Michelle Monaghan – True Detective

Our pick: Uzo Aduba. Aduba and Kathy Bates are the top contenders for this one. This will be a close contest.
Winner in 2014: Jacqueline Bisset

Best Supporting Actor

Matt Bomer - The Normal Heart
Alan Cumming - The Good Wife
Colin Hanks - Fargo
Bill Murray - Olive Kitteridge

Our pick: Matt Bomer. Bomer went through an intense physical transformation for this role and will be favourite to win this especially given the Emmy snub. However, Colin Hanks could provide stiff competition.
Winner in 2014: Jon Voight

We are looking forward to all the hilarity promised by second time hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. See you on Monday morning. Keep the betting pool flooded!
