2013 saw several B-Town actors making their acting forays on the small-screen. Though not a novel concept, Sridevi, Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon have acted in serials earlier, it is definitely a trend waiting to catch up. The fact that at least half-a-dozen filmstars have made the crossover has set the ball rolling this year.

Anil Kapoor
After being a part of the original hit series 24, Anil Kapoor decided to bring the franchise to India. Not only did he co-produce the series he also made his desi TV debut with the remake. And unlike his peers, who are on TV either hosting or judging shows, he embraced the small screen as an actor. Playing Jai Singh Rathod the desi equivalent to Jack Bauer, Anil has raised the bar for Bolly actors looking at making their acting debuts on the small screen.

Shilpa Shirodkar
The 90’s heroine Shilpa Shirodkar returned to acting after a sabbatical of 13 years and she chose the small screen to make a comeback. The serial Ek Mutthi Aasmaan brings to light the problems faced by domestic workers and Shilpa plays the pivotal role of Kamlabai. Having lived abroad, where one does not enjoy the privileges of a domestic worker the actress says she knows their value and couldn’t have got a better subject for a comeback.

Ruslaan Mumtaz
Chocolate-faced hero Ruslaan Mumtaz entered Bollywood with Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar. The four-film- old actor last seen in I Don’t Luv U  made his TV debut with Jee Le Zara opposite Sangeeta Ghosh. The younger man-older woman love story is warming up and Ruslaan who has a perfect physique is seen flaunting it at every given opportunity. Last heard, he had signed a comedy film Romeo Idiot Jathani Juliet. Remains to be seen whether he will juggle the two or leave one for the other as many of his predecessors have done in the past.

Richa Chhada
The Gangs of Wasseypur actress made her TV debut with a small role in Anil Kapoor’s 24. She played an actress who is kidnapped by Anil’s character. Richa however made it clear that she is not interested in any more TV shows and 24 was an exception. Well Richa, never say never!

Rahul Dev
The villain of several Bolly and regional films, Rahul Dev made his TV debut with Devon Ke Dev Mahadev.  He plays a demon Arunasur who takes on Shiva. It was the character and the distinctive look that attracted Rahul to the role. It will be interesting to see the face-off between the telly hottie Mohit Raina, who plays Shiva and Rahul on screen.

In the pipeline
Amitabh Bachchan who has been hosting KBC will soon make an acting foray on TV with a yet-to-be-titled serial directed by Anurag Kashyap. The serial has him playing a construction magnate. The show that was to go on air in December has been delayed and according to sources will air next year some time in May-June.

Jaya Bachchan will soon be making her TV debut with a show based on a novel. The show that has her playing a single parent to three sons will go on air before her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s debut fiction show.
