As September 8 marks International Literacy Day, here's a list of some of the celebrities from Hollywood to Bollywood who support the cause for education.

Angelina Jolie

 
Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is very passionate about the cause of children's education. She has co-chaired the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which is aimed at funding education for children in conflict zones. Since 2007, Jolie has also chaired the Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting.

Tom Cruise


After being labelled a dyslexic at a young age, Tom Cruise is particularly a big supporter of comprehensive learning and writing. Cruise has also been actively involved with the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (H E L P), an initiative that aims to offer fee education across many communities worldwide.

Shakira

Columbian singing sensation and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira, established the Pies Descalzos Foundation  in 1997, which is a school in her country which aims to educate local children. She also served as the chairperson for the event Action Week 2008, sponsored by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE).

Rahul Bose

Bollywood star Rahul Bose, was appointed a Oxfam Global ambassador in 2007. Bose helped establish an NGO, The Foundation, which provides scholarships to underprivileged children in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who were affected by the 2004 tsunami.

Dolly Parton


Country singer Dolly Parton's Dollywood Foundation "is a program that instills the love of learning and reading in children from the earliest age possible". The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library aims to promote childhood literacy by giving free books by post to children from birth till  they enter primary school, in her home town in East Tennessee (US).

Priyanka Chopra

In 2010, Priyanka Chopra was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights.  Chopra who supports United Nation's Girl Up campaign, particularly supports causes of women emancipation and education.

Nathan Fillion

Castle's Nathan Fillion is the co-founder of a non-profit organisation, Kids Need to Read, that provides books to children who do not have funds to purchase reading and writing material. They also provide books to underfunded libraries.

Andre Agassi

American Tennis player Andre Agassi has been a long time supporter of children's education. In 2001 he set up the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education, which aims to provide deprived children with an education in the US.

Gul Panag

Former beauty queen and actress Gul Panag,  is also a an activist that is dedicated to many causes through her NGO  the Colonel Shamsher Singh Foundation. Her foundation also focuses on education and has initiated a collection drive for old computer, order to install then in villages to promote computer literacy.
