You better think twice before you cross veteran actor Anupam Kher. We round up 10 times the actor has either blasted his fellow actors and filmmakers or called out on other celebrities.

Kher takes on the award wapsi gang

When filmmakers like Dibakar Banerjee and Anand Patwardhan returned their National Awards in solidarity with the protesting FTII students, Anupam Kher slammed them on social media calling them the ‘Award Wapsi Gang’. He tweeted, “This #AwardWapsiGang has not insulted the Govt but The Jury, The Chairman of the Jury and the audience who watched their films. #Agenda,” he posted. That’s not all. He said that though Dibakar got National Award for two films, he returned the award for Khosla Ka Ghosla, which belonged to the producer. He never returned the one for Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye, because the producer was Walt Disney. And he said that ‘Maine apne hisse ka award wapas kiya hai.”

Kher disses the Padma Awards

In 2010, Anupam had dissed the Padma Awards saying it was not authentic. He posted, “Awards in our country have become a mockery of our system. There is no authenticity left in any one of them. Be it films, National or now Padma.”

Kher makes a U-turn

In 2016, the actor changed his tune when he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. He tweeted, “Happy, humbled & Honoured to share that i have been awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Govt. of India. Greatest news of my life #JaiHind.” Immediately the twitteratis dug up his old tweet mocking all awards and trolled him with tweets like, “Ok. So you accepted Padma Award despite knowing it has no authenticity only for @narendramodi ji. Jai Ho!” Not one to take it lying down Anupam replied with, “I pity those who think that I am being rewarded by the BJP… I am being criticised because losers have this kind of attitude, winners don’t have this kind of attitude.” He was speaking to a channel.

Kher taunts Aamir

When Aamir Khan commented about growing intolerance in the country, saying that, alarmed by some incidents, his wife Kiran Rao had suggested they should move out of the country, Kher reacted strongly. For two days he kept posting on Twitter, “Dear @aamir_khan. Presumed country has become #Intolerant. What do you suggest to millions of Indians? Leave India? Or wait till regime changes?” another tweet was, “Dear @aamir_khan. When did ‘Incredible India’ become ‘Intolerant India’ for you? Only in the last 7-8 months?” And continued with, “Dear @aamir_khan. Did you ask Kiran which country would she like to move out to? Did you tell her that this country has made you AAMIR KHAN.” And this, “Dear @aamir_khan. #SatyamevaJayate you talked about evil practices but gave hope. So even in ‘Intolerant’ times you need to spread hope not fear.

Kher on denial of visa to Pakistan

Last month Kher was denied a visa by the Pakistan government to attend a literary festival in Karachi. Talking to the media, he said, “I am not angry. I am hurt, upset. I want to know the reason. Out of 18 why was I singled out.” He also took to Twitter: “Has my visa been denied because I speak about India’s rich tradition of tolerance or I am a Kashmiri Pandit who may expose Pak terror nexus?” “Didn’t Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs red flag my name to Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi? Why hide facts deliberately?” Finally, when he was granted the visa he said he won’t be able to go as he had given away his dates.

Kher says foreign media unfair

Taking on the foreign media after he gave an interview to BBC in Singapore, Kher said that even foreign media is biased in reporting about India and they posed queries only on intolerance. “The BBC interview was a selective one about intolerance. Foreign media chooses what suits them. I raised my concern in the interview and I think it’s not aired,” he said adding that the New York Times and The Economist have highlighted intolerance instead of the development aspects of India. “International media has headlines like ‘India no more a tolerant country’. The intolerance level in those countries may be higher than India,” he added.

Kher accuses JNU

Kher recently said that authorities at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University have refused to screen his film Buddha in A Traffic Jam and accused the university of stifling freedom of speech and expression. “JNU should practice what they are preaching. If they’re talking about freedom of speech and expression, then they should follow it also,” Kher said to a news channel.
