Verdict: Need a laugh? Watch Topiwaala

In general Kannada star Upendra’s films are meant for a slightly more massy audience. And Topiwaala, his latest offering, is no different; the film retains his unique style of narration and dialogue delivery. And if they are any indication, one might even wonder if Upendra acted in his own way without bothering about the existence of the director, MG Srinivas.

The one big problem this film has is that the actor has let too many dialogues from his box office hit film, A, to be repeated in this one. However, it does have a lot of hilarious situations that will definitely make you laugh. He’s even used characters who represent the corrupt politicians of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. And to take things a step further, he even mimics Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare.

Topiwaala is a film about Basak (played by Upendra) who’s forced to become a thief and plans to steal an idol of Lord Krishna from a temple. A character called Sarkar (Ravishankar) engages a person called Suman Bedi (Bhavana) to enquire into Basak and his character.

Suman, in the disguise of a temple priest’s daughter, tries to make Basak’s life miserable but falls in love with him.
Meanwhile, a politician’s son enters the picture and assigns a few rowdies to gather some information about a secret Swiss bank account.

Yes! It does sound a bit complicated but everything comes together in the end — you will see. Of course the secret of the bank account and Basak are connected... Topiwaala has quite a few sequences that show the police department in poor light and we are not sure why. Cops are seen picking pockets and even indulging in eve teasing. Now while it’s totally unnecessary, Upendra’s films always enjoy the luxury of showcasing such unjustified scenes.

However, it was disappointing to see Bhavana in such a brief role. The only consolation is the dream sequence in which she looks lovely. Ravishankar, Achyut and Rangayana Raghu have all done fine jobs in keeping with the flow of the story. Music director Hari Krishna’s foot-tapping numbers ensure that the film’s pace doesn’t slacken. It’s worth watching for sure, if you can match up to Upendra’s speed.

PS: Upendra had made it clear that his film is not for those who don’t have brains!
