National award winning filmmaker Aruna Raje is finally making a come back after 15 years. Her Marathi film Firebrand is based on the life of a rape survivor. She aims to bring out issues faced by a victim that have never been dealt before. "I did not want to stick to the legal, medical or quantum of punishment narratives," says the filmmaker known for her impressive body of work that are mainstream and deals with feminism. "This film is about human aspect of how the survivor deals with day-to-day life and highlights the role of a supportive spouse," she adds. Firebrand is Priyanka Chopra's Purple Pebbles Pictures' first web production.

"The moment I approached the production house, they liked the idea and came aboard," reveals Raje's whose film will be the first Marathi venture for the digital platform Netflix. Highlighting the sensitive subject and increasing instances of rapes in the country, Raje for a long time wanted to highlight the subject through the medium of cinema. The film shows what the survivor goes through after answering the queries raised by cops, courts and hospitals.

"Even the faintest suggestion of intimacy can seem intimidating and soon the traumatic incident begins to cast a shadow on one's life, marriage and more," she explains.

The film has the 2012 National Awardee Usha Jadhav reprising the lead. Raje whose work is marked by brilliant casting said that she finalised Jadhav soon after meeting her. "She had a mix of both, the fire and vulnerability that I was looking for. And she has delivered a brilliant performance," she added. "In my brief to Jadhav, I told her that her character is not seeking sympathy but she wants to live life on her terms, despite the ugly incident of her childhood." She further mentioned Shoojit Sircar's Pink (2016) which also dealt with unwanted male sexual attention film. "The film tried to make the male saviour the hero." Other cast in the film include Rajeshwari Sachdev, Sachin Khedekar, and Girish Kulkarni. The film is slated to release today.
