Happiness and peace are both states of the mind. It is important to stop yourself, important to tell yourself when to stop running and chasing! If you look for peace in materialistic things you’ll have to find a new thing to replace every day. All it takes is one true, face-to-face conversation with yourself to set yourself right. I like to have a mental conversation with myself. While everyone likes to pat themselves on the back, the point is to be truthful! No harm applauding or even scolding oneself as and when required.

My one hour a day spent at the swimming pool is my way of staying peaceful. I’m in the swimming pool and there is no mobile phone to reach me. There’s no competition. And there is no criticism, especially none from my wife! (laughs) Though my wife is the director of my life and gives me perspective, thankfully she can’t swim!

Many people meditate but I reach my quiet place when I write. Whether it’s a play script or anything else that’s creative, the process of writing stills my mind, even if I’m sitting in a noisy cafe. When I’m listening to my mind creating, to my inner rock n’ roll, then I’m blissful.

My calm and peaceful place is my home. I just need to sit on my bed with meditative music or the calming dialogues of Louise Hayes, Dr Wayne Dyer or Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to be peaceful. Also the biggest thing for me when I experience trouble is to flip the coin mentally and be grateful for all that I have — and each of us is given several things that we can be grateful for! After I have meditated, practised gratefulness and gone to sleep, I wake up fresh as new!

I’ve been through a very trying period recently. My brother in Vancouver was shot in the face two months ago but thankfully survived. He took four bullets on the side of his face fired by a drug addict who he’d never seen before, someone who had a psychotic case history.

The last eight weeks have been the toughest but it’s also taught me a couple of things — that nothing matters as much as family, one’s health and having good, supportive people around one. I think it’s my faith in Jesus and Guru Nanak that really got me through such a nightmarish time and I believe it is spiritual faith that ultimately gives one strength and peace of mind!
