Dr Komal teaches Kenjutsu, the Japanese martial art of sword fighting that helps concentration and reduces stress

Imagine, the dexterity needed to teach close combat skills to a body like Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s secret foreign intelligence agency? Well, Unarmed Commando Combat Academy (UCCA), a group based in Mumbai, has taught lethal warfare skills not only to RAW but also to Special Forces such as para commandos, gorkhas, National Security Guards and Marine Commando Forces.

The academy is run by Dr Deepak Rao, executive director, and Dr Seema Rao, director operation. The good news, however, is that 60 specialised self-defence and terrorism combat courses for civilians are taught here as well.

Dr Komal, VS deputy director administration UCCA, who teaches Kenjutsu (the Japanese martial art using the sword or katana) says, “The goal of Kenjutsu is to concentrate on a single thought and action. You have to be highly alert and obliterate all other notions and fears. The moment you start thinking about what is supposed to happen in a fight, your opponent will take less than a second to slaughter you into pieces. You might lose the fight before you even begin. So don’t think, just fight!”
She continues, “People forget to actually live, working 12 hours a day and six days a week in corporate prisons. Kenjutsu is a way of self-realisation and liberation of the mind. It teaches people to let go of their habits, free themselves of fear and enjoy peace.”

She adds, “Kenjutsu is a mental game. It’s not about physical power but about mental agility. It helps in gaining self-confidence, clarity of thought, observation power, and ability to assess situations and stress management.”

Incidentally, the security at the academy is extremely strict where the use of cellphones is disallowed. Hidden cameras keep tabs on visitors and students.

For safety concerns, students are mostly taught Kenjutsu with a wooden sword. UCCA currently has 15 students learning this art. Information about other 59 courses is available on www.commandocombat.com.

Incidentally, celebrities Rahul Nanda, Nikitin Dheer (Jodhaa Akbar fame) and Abhay Deol are known to have learnt skills at the academy.
