Cannes is a caviar slurry of couture, canapés and carats. It’s the Mecca of high fashion when the whole planet turns to dissecting and scrutinising each red carpet look with an unsparing eye. Which actress is going to out-dazzle her competitor? Are we gonna see the usual suspects like Ralph & Russo and Elie Saab on Sonam? Is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan going to recreate a Roberto Cavalli game-changer yet again? Will it be a top knot and smokey eyes or two-toned lips and fresh, dewy-faced make-up? All eyes are set on Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who’ve always managed to wreak a pap frenzy of sorts each season of Cannes. It’ll be great to see the actresses opting for up-and-coming designers and discovering lesser-known labels as opposed to taking the tried-and-tested route. We asked some design mavens to visualise the two actresses in their brand lingo and the results were quite refreshing. Here’s the Cannes wish-list...

Sari-inspired
Rocky S: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Rocky Star, who’s known Aishwarya for many years was inspired to give her a classic and timeless sari-inspired look. He says, “The sari looks effortlessly graceful and stunning on every woman. It brings about a sense of confidence and femininity.” Rocky’s sketch is a corset blouse-sari style gown with rich ornamental embroidery. He adds, “She is the epitome of grace and beauty and has always looked stunning in a sari. I think it’s time to bring the sari back to the red carpet, and who better to do it than Aishwarya?”

Since India has such a heritage of drapes, why not put our signature aesthetic on the world map?

Glam-rock glamazon
Falguni and Shane Peacock:  Sonam Kapoor

The designer duo has always been known for their artisanal use of feathers and beads and their vision of the fashionista is nothing short of statement-making. Says Falguni, “We’ve just gone a few notches sexier. The actress wears a lot of high neck numbers so we were like, why not go deep-neck? We wanted to inject an of-the-moment sexiness with a harness look which radiates an S&M vibe, though executed in a classy way.”

The duo has peppered the outfit with their signature feathers and stars and defined the look with primarily three key elements — tulle, sequins and crystals. She adds, “It’s a gunmetal tone which emits a glam rock vibe.” It’ll be a cool addition to a red carpet usually flooded with cloying, romantic offerings.

India redefined
Payal Singhal: Sonam Kapoor

The queen of evening resort, Payal Singhal picks a grey organza gown with gold mukaish embroidery for Sonam. She says, “I think that it’s a great blend of a modern contemporary silhouette and traditional Indian embroidery and a great way to showcase Indian fashion and culture in a truly modern and fashion-forward way.” Singhal opines that the silhouette would work well for Sonam given her towering frame and incredible carriage. Classic meets contemporary can never go out of style, no matter what!

Embracing mixed marriages
Arpita Mehta: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Arpita Mehta, known for her signature mirror work, beads and pastel tones gives an all dust pink outfit to the former Miss World. This look includes a fitted, embellished skirt with a layer of a back trail besides a bodycon, one sleeve top with a front cut out.

She explains the look. “The embellishments include bold floral thread and sequin embroidery in a specific placement alongwith the all over sheath work. The mood behind this look is soft- yet-bold, while the colours and embroidery is soft, the sculpted skirt and sleeve is bold.”

The look also incorporates a subtle ruffle as a detail on her off shoulder strap and sleeve hem. For her hair and make-up, Mehta suggests the magenta lip colour and one-sided, side-swept vintage curls.

French Riviera-inspired
Nandita Mahtani: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Inspired by the beautiful coast of Cannes — the sketch depicts a white and silver Swarovski-encrusted gown in pure georgette and sheer balloon sleeves. “A deep neckline, cinched at the waist and a high slit, the outfit accentuates the body,” says Mahtani. Running along the slit is a detailed hand-embroidered design in thread, sequins, stones and real silver in hues of blues and white — a surreal representation of the French Rivera. “Dreamy and ethereal, birds engulfed in pretty flowers the sketch aspires to embody the feminine, sexy and confident woman of today and who better than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to do that?” adds Nandita.

Cannes is the cauldron of the best and the ultimate in high fashion. Superimpose couture finesse with oodles of chutzpah and confidence and you’ve got an unbeatable sartorial winner!

Curve-accentuating
Surily G: Deepika Padukone

Surily shares, “Blue is the hot colour of the season. Deepika is in excellent shape and I wanted to accentuate her body and emphasise her great legs, at the same time, complement her petite waist. All the design needed was the right kind of sheen — mainly Swarovski and crystals and minimal embroidery. I’d give her minimal accessories because I believe that less is more. I’d give her solitaires, maybe a ring or a bracelet in terms of jewellery and complete her look with a bun, to show off her cheekbones. A pink mouth will add a youthful touch to her ensemble.”
