Fans of Gopal Das Neeraj mourn the noted Hindi poet, share his iconic lines

Doyen of Hindi poetry Gopal Das Neeraj passed away this evening at the AIIMS trauma centre here. He was 93.

A Padma Bhushan awardee, Neeraj had suffered a head injury following a fall at his house in Agra and was undergoing treatment at a hospital there, Dr Rajesh Malhotra, chief of the AIIMS trauma centre, said.

"He was shifted to the trauma centre here last night in a critical condition. He had kidney failure, infection all over his body and head injury. He passed away today at around 7.30 pm," he said.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences via Twitter. President Kovind tweeted, "

Sad to hear of the passing of veteran poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj. From “Prem Pujari” to “Cha Cha Cha” his compositions and film songs are still remembered, still heard and still stir the soul.

India has lost a gem of a lyricist and poet with the demise of Gopaldas Saxena 'Neeraj'.

He is immortalised by his excellence in poetry such as लिखे जो खत तुझे of कन्यादान and ए भाई ज़रा देख के चलो of मेरा नाम जोकर.

Neeraj's family was by his side during his last hours.

The poet had also written songs for Bollywood films.

He was awarded Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.
