January 2019 saw the release of the highly awaited film Vinaya Vidheya Rama, starring Ram Charan and directed by Boyapati Srinu. Coming after the actor’s biggest career hit Rangasthalam, the new release proved to be a major disappointment at the box office. In fact, the film that collected a share of Rs 65 crore (with Rs 100 crore gross) incurred a loss of between Rs 27-30 crore. While the losses of the film are evident in its numbers and box office performance, it seems the film’s director is in denial!

Going into some technicalities, when films suffer losses of over 30 per cent, it is a general understanding for Telugu filmmakers that partial compensation will be made to the distributors to salvage the situation and also to maintain the bonhomie of mutual interest. And in that regard, Rs 10 crore was refunded by the producer and actor together.

However, trouble seems to have brewed in this paradise when the film’s director refused to return Rs 5 crore, asking for the statement of accounts of the film, going so far as to claiming that the producer sold the film at exorbitant rates which was the cause for the loss.

The fact that Ram Charan released a statement where he called the film a flop show seems to have been a hard hit as well for the filmmaker who is to come to terms with the film’s failure. “For Charan, the debacle of the film was troublesome after he saw a transition from being tagged a star to being called an actor with high capabilities in Rangasthalam. Even though no one is stating it, Vinaya Vidheya Rama was a humiliating outing for him,” reveals a source.

Sources further tell us that Boyapati and the film’s producer DVV Danayya had a heated argument which led to some verbal exchange of not very kind words. It was then that producers Dil Raju and NV Prasad stepped in to salvage the situation. It is to be seen when this offscreen drama will come to a conclusion, and if the director sees sense in the scenario and decides to make the process easy for everyone else.
