When actor Rani Mukerji visited the DNA  office recently, clad simply in a salwar-kurta and minimal make-up, she looked nothing like the Aati Kya Khandala girl who rocked the look in a short dress and high heels. Unending rounds of promotional activity for her latest film seemed to have taken a toll on the otherwise bubbly actor. “All of us have good days and bad days. Like today, I’m tired but I can’t slow down,’’ she said, a tad ruefully. However, a large cup of green tea and gentle prodding by the After Hrs team seemed to work wonders on the petite beauty’s mood. And soon the mischievous glint in the light eyes was restored.
“I am getting a lot of positive feedback for the dance numbers in Aiyyaa. People are going bonkers over my belly,” she said impishly. “After all this time, if I can still shock my audience it means I’m doing something right. That’s what I have wanted — for the audience to wonder if it is really Rani’s belly moving or is it a camera trick,” she added.

Ask her if she is consciously trying to reinvent herself on screen, and she replies with characteristic candour. “Since I debuted in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat 17 years ago, a lot has changed in the way films are made and promoted. If I have to survive in the film industry, I will have to adapt to the change. Whether I like it or not is not important. I will have to imbibe and learn from what’s going on around me.”

Point out that her No One killed Jessica character comes close to our perception of how Rani Mukerji is in real life — brash, strong-willed and dismissive of other people’s ideas — she reveals that she gives a little of herself to every character she portrays on screen. “I cannot alienate the women I play in films from the person I am in real life. My portrayals are often the amalgamation of how the character was written and how I perceive her,” she said.

When the conversation veered to lighter topics, Rani revealed that most of her co-stars had a lot of fun working with her. “My logic is simple. You spend 100 days working on a film and those 100 days have to be special. They have to be moments that you would remember as a special time in your life. The destiny of a film you can’t predict — whether it will work or not. But what you can take back with you are the moments that bring a smile to your face every time you look back. All I remember about shooting most of my films is whether I enjoyed myself working with the people I was with at that time”. Here’s wishing the light-eyed beauty more fun times in the future!
