Some Hollywood actors often go the extra mile to get under the skin of their character. Even those who possess some of the hottest bodies on this planet, are willing to forgo all that hard work and put on weight to essay character roles in their movies. Gaining 5 lbs to 15 lbs is not considered a major transformation. We did a round up of actors who underwent a major weight gain spree of 30 lbs or more...

Bradley Cooper
Weight gain
: 40 lbs
Movie: American Sniper (2014)
Hot-bod Cooper put on a generous 40 lbs in just a few months for the role. To get 'desired results', he would eat every 55 minutes and consumed a whopping 8,000 calories in a day! He was determined to do it naturally, didn't want to use any hormones or steroids. The 40-year-old actor was very systematic about the whole thing and took his trainer with him wherever he went.

Ryan Gosling
Weight gain
: 60 lbs
Movie: The Lovely Bones (2009)
Tipped the weighing scale from 150 lbs to 210 lbs, for this movie where he was to play a grieving father. The 34-year-old actor would joke that he was "was melting Haagen Dazs and drinking it when I was thirsty." What was the worst part about putting on 60 lbs? His role was given to Mark Wahlberg instead. Ouch! that must have really hurt.

Rene Zellweger
Weight gain
: 30 lbs
Movie: Bridget Jones's Diary (2001); Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)
The usually svlete actress gained 28 lbs for the first installment of the movie by consuming 4,000 calories a day. Her role scored her an Oscar nomination, thankfully! "I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you long-term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time," Zellweger says. She again did an encore of weight gain for the second installment of the movie.

Russell Crowe
Weight gain
: 63 lbs
Movie: Body of Lies (2008)
The actor who lost weight for his acclaimed role in Gladiator, gained 63 lbs for Body of Lies. "Bring on the burgers, baby!" he was quoted as saying. "If you want to put on weight, you just elect to live a sedentary life style," he said. "Just as soon as you stop actually being active and decide to eat what ever you want, then these two things will combine very quickly," said Crowe.

Christian Bale
Weight gain
: 99 lbs, 43 lbs
Movie: Batman Begins (2005), American Hustle (2013)
Bale beefed up putting on 60 lbs in a span of two months for Batman Begins (2005) and it didn't end there. He eventually added an additional 39 lbs while filming the movie. Bale was on a strict diet of chicken, tuna, and steamed vegetables, and daily three-hour running and weight-training sessions.
For American Hustle (2013), Bale gained 43 lbs in order to essay a pot-bellied man gorged on lots of doughnuts, cheeseburgers and anything he could lay his hands on.

Charlize Theron
Weight gain
: 30 lbs
Movie: Monster (2003)
Theron shaved off her eyebrows, wore prosthetic teeth and a bad case of makeup to play Aileen Wuornos, a real-life serial killer. "I first began stuffing myself with Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but after a while I got sick of them," she said. "I love potato chips, so that was a good thing for me. I'm a salty girl, so I had my secret stash of potato chips with me at all times." She won a Best Actress Oscar for her efforts.

George Clooney
Weight gain
: 30 lbs
Movie: Syriana (2005)
Clooney gained 30 lbs in 30 days, pigging out on pasta. "The truth is, it's not nearly as fun as it sounds, the idea of putting on that kind of weight, but at the end of the day, in general, that's what we do for a living," he said adding, "So my job was just to eat as fast as I could, as much as I could... But mostly, you just ate until you wanted to throw up, and made sure you didn't throw up. So that was my job for a month... was eating." The torture baffed him a Best Supporting Oscar.

Jared Leto
Weight gain
: 67 lbs
Movie: Chapter 27 (2007)
The excessive weigh gain gave him gout and caused severe stress to the 42-year-old actor's body. So much so, he spent much of his obese days in a wheelchair because it was too painful for him to walk. His weight gain secret? A nightly cocktail of microwaved pints of ice cream spiked with olive oil and soy sauce (to promote bloating).
