Disney has announced that Star Wars-themed parks in California and Florida will begin construction in 2016. Walt Disney COO Thomas Staggs revealed the news on though he did not confirm an opening date, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Some details of the new 14-acre attractions at Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida have already been revealed, including an experience where fans are dropped into a rebel battle.

The lands will also have a ride where visitors get to control the Millennium Falcon.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said, "We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance."

Iger also confirmed that the lands will contain characters from the original Star Wars movies alongside those from the upcoming The Force Awakens.

The next film in the franchise The Force Awakens will be released in UK cinemas on December 17.
