Director Kathryn Bigelow says she believes one can no more stay ignorant of the fact how racism is a threat to the world and talking about it is important.

The 65-year-old filmmaker's movie "Detroit" is up for release, which tackles the events of the Detroit rebellion in July 1967, that was triggered by heavy-handed policing of the city's black population.

Talking about her film, Bigelow tells The Guardian, "It's just a horrific tragedy and I feel the urgency to have a conversation about race in America is even more vital than ever.

"Even though this story takes place 50 years ago, it feels, sadly, very much like today and therefore tomorrow.

Until there's a meaningful conversation about race in America, I'm worried these events will keep happening," The movie, featuring John Boyega and Will Poulter, releases in the UK on August 25.
