In an interview with Ellen on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, Chris Evans talked about how his contract with Marvel to play the American champion of justice would be up with the release of Avengers 4 in 2019. “My contract is up,” he told DeGeneres. “I have Avengers three and four. We do three now and four in the latter part of the year and then after that, that is the end of my contract.” Evans further claimed that he had no idea whether his contract would be renewed after the fourth film.

In an interview with USA Today the following day, Evans expressed his sadness and gratitude toward the role and his part to play in the franchise's success. "I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be hard for me. But the passing of time and the passing of torches is part of the experience. Nothing lasts forever." says Evans. "However they want to proceed after Avengers 4, it’s really up to them. I walk away with no regrets and endlessly thankful."

What came as an even bigger shock was when Evans also talked about Robert Downey Jr. aka Iron Man's future in the franchise. "Downey is far closer to reaching that point where he may walk away. And I don’t know how you replace Downey as Tony Stark," says Evans adding "I don’t know who else can touch that."

Downey, who will be reprising his role as the playboy, philanthropist, genius, billionaire Tony Stark in the upcoming Spiderman: Homecoming releasing July 7 might just meet his end in the third installment of the franchise, 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, if Evans's statements hold true. Downey and Evans, who have cemented themselves in their iconic superhero roles, would definitely leave fans sobbing if and when their tenures come to an end.

However, Chris Evans shouldn't be sad for too long, as his new film Gifted opens in theatres on April 12, and has already received early rave reviews.
