He thinks, he pauses for a moment before he starts answering the questions. Interestingly as soon as the news of filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker warming up to frenemy actor Shah Rukh Khan has come out in the open, Aamir decided to reveal that it was Gowariker who rejected actor Amitabh Bachchan’s voiceover in Lagaan.
“I was shocked and argued with Ashutosh why this had not struck him before asking me to go and meet Amitji. But, Amitji took it so sportingly and told me that he was relieved since all films for which he had done a voiceover had flopped,” Khan said.
However, Gowariker again changed his mind and decided finally it would be Bachchan only for the voice over, Aamir said this at the party that he hosted to celebrate 10 years of his film Lagaan and his production house.
While everybody in the audience apparently stood shocked at the revelation, Khan further revealed that he actually went up to Bachchan and told him that Gowariker has “gone mad”.
“I again went to Amitji and told him that my director has gone mad. He now wants you for the film. Amitji did not utter a word, but reminded me that he was superstitious and felt that he brought bad luck. I said we are ready to take the risk because so many factors had gone against the film during the making but we had overcome all the difficulties,” Khan added in the presence of Bachchan.
As Gowariker didn’t know what to say and stood dumfounded, Aamir went on and on about the incident. “Ashutosh was visibly embarrassed about the whole thing. Everybody expected the party to be a celebration and not an occasion to bring out the dirty details. But everybody was too keen to know the details because it seemed foolish to have rejected Bachchan’s voice (something that he faced at the beginning of his career in the hands of All India Radio),” says an onlooker. Ashutosh apparently tried to explain why later on but when Bachchan left the hall, he was overheard telling his friends how Aamir has ‘landed him in a soup.’
