Johnny Depp came, he saw -- and he conquered.

Fans waiting for the star of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge" at its world premiere here went wild as the franchise's most loved character, Captain Jack Sparrow, made a grand entry on the red carpet.

Earlier the question on everyone's lips was whether the top Hollywood star would make an appearance at the premiere of the film, also known as "Pirates of Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales".

He didn't disappoint his fans, who had been waiting for hours along the barricades put up at the venue for the film's team to arrive.

Chants of "Johnny, Johnny" filled the air as Depp arrived.

"This is amazing. I am so happy to come here and experience this. After seeing the crowd here, I have been thinking we should come here with more films," Depp told reporters at the red carpet.

Depp, who is hoping to revive his career after a string of failures such as "The Lone Ranger" and "The Rum Diary" and ugly controversies about his personal life he and actress Amber Heard have just gone through a messy divorce - looked cheerful.

New entrants to the franchise's fifth instalment -- Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario -- and returning stars Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom attended the event at the Shanghai Disney Resort. This is the first time that a Hollywood film has premiered here.

Bardem, who plays the baddie, Captain Salazar, was a crowd favourite as well and obliged the waiting fans with selfies and autographs.

The actor, who shares screen space with Depp for the first time, says it was a "pleasure" working with him.

"It is like a tennis match. You know he is not going to let you down. He is always going to bring something alive," he says.

Thwaites plays Henry Turner and Scodelario is Carina Smyth, while Rush and Bloom replay their roles of Captain Hector Barbossa and Captain William "Will" Turner, respectively.

Shanghai Disneyland Park, which opened last June, features a "Pirates of the Caribbean" themed ride known as the Battle for the Sunken Treasure.

The film has been produced by Jerry Bruckheimer while Jeff Nathanson has written the screenplay. Directed by Joachim R nning and Espen Sandberh, the film will be released worldwide on May 26.
