Because of the egos involved, a remake of Bride Wars planned a decade ago, with Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra, never got made. Most A-List actresses are allergic to working with their professional equals. So, while Kangana Ranaut acted in Fashion mainlining PC early on in her career, now that they are on par, it has to be a parallel role or it isn’t happening. Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma acted in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which happened firstly because it was a Yash Chopra film and secondly Anushka was not in Kat’s league at the time. Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla only recently worked together in Gulaab Gang, though they were offered several two-heroine films when they were at the top. The fact is most actresses prefer to act in solo-heroine films. However given the right project, the right filmmaker (Sanjay Bhansali, Karan Johar, etc) and carefully constructed contracts, they will agree to share the screen with a rival. This year and the next, expect to see a slew of such films....
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will share screen space in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and the former has no qualms or apprehensions about the role. Karan Johar should get credit for this. He has a reputation of being a fair filmmaker. Neither Kajol, nor Rani had any complains after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Ditto for Rani and Preity in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Also, KJo is the new Yash Chopra. Every leading lady wants to act in his films, even if that means a two-heroine project.
Dil Dhadakne Do
PC made her debut in 2003 and was already among the top leading ladies when Anushka made her debut in 2008. Today, they are contemporaries. It was a casting coup of sorts when Zoya managed to cast Piggy Chops and Anushka together for Dil Dhadakne Do. While Anushka asserts that her role is smaller compared to Priyanka’s, she doesn’t mind the lesser screen time.
Bajirao Mastani
Priyanka, who did a item song in Deepika Padukone’s Ram-Leela will now be seen in a full-fledged role in Bajirao Mastani, where Deepika plays the title role. But this field is not level. It would be if Dips paired with Sonam/Alia/Parineeti/Sonakshi. And PeeCee with Kareena/Katrina.
