Warner Bros and DC released the first photos of actress Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El for their upcoming series Supergirl. The series is based on characters from DC Comics and is currently in production for CBS.

The toned down colours of the costume are reminiscent of Henry Cavill's Superman suit for Man Of Steel

.

The costumes have been designed by Oscar winning designer Colleen Atwood, who is also creating costumes for The Flash and Arrow, CBS and DC's other two TV series. On the DC website, Colleen Atwood said, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.” Earlier in the week Benoist posted a photo with Helen Slater who played Supergirl in the 1984 film. Slater has been cast in the series as well.

In the upcoming series, Benoist will play Superman’s 24-year-old cousin Kara Zor-El. Supergirl will follow Kara as she escapes the destruction of Krypton to Earth and learns to embrace her powers. Other characters in the show, include Mechad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Alex Danvers as Kara's foster sister with Helen Slater and Dean Cain in unspecified roles.
