Be it Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, Opening Ceremony or Tibi - New York Fashion Week Fall Winter runway was awash with culottes or cropped pants. In India, designers like Varun Bahl, Nikasha, Anupama Dayal, Masaba and Rajesh Pratap Singh have given them a new twist. The trend became huge when Sonam Kapoor was seen on the posters of Khoobsurat in a vibrant pair from Anupama and Kareena wore them in Singham 2. Of late, Jacqueline Fernandez was seen in a pair from Rajesh Pratap and Nikasha, Ileana D'cruz and Tisca Chopra were seen in Masaba cropped pants while Rani Mukerji was seen in a long kurta paired with culottes from Sabyasachi.

'70s staple
Designer Varun Bahl says, "Culottes were a '70s staple, and while they've been around they're crossing over into the mainstream this year. And it's not surprising, considering gaucho pants have got their groove back. Wear them with crop tops, blazers and a pair of high heels or just simply team them with a camisole or crisp white shirt."

Versatile silhouette
Varun adds, "This silhouette actually works for lots of different body types. It's slim over the hip and bottom and then flares out, so it's great for women with bigger thighs. The trick is how to wear this look. Pair your culottes with a top that accentuates the waist and slims your torso- from a tucked-in button down shirt, to a cropped top or bustier with a tailored jacket works well. You also need to balance the proportions of the wide leg with a substantial shoe, whether it's a heel or a heavy flat, and you're good to go!"

Signify freedom for women
Designer Nikasha, who recently showcased them at the recently-concluded Amazon Indian Fashion Week in vibrant tones says, "Wide-legged pants started in the '40s, post World War II to signify freedom for women. Wear them in different lengths- ankle-length can be worn with a tunic till the knee and or mid-thigh. Long culottes can be worn with a shorter top or jacket."

Designer Anupama Dayal suggests ways to pull them off. "They can be worn in various ways. The current trend is to provide a surprising proportion - either a really long top or a short cropped one. Also, it looks great in layers. The long top and layered options are good for Indian-inspired ensembles. Any body type can wear culottes by adapting the upper. If you do not have a flat stomach and a fit butt, avoid a short cropped top with the culottes. Wear light asymmetric long layered tunics and kurtas with your culottes."

Give definition to your waist
Knowing your body type and picking a pair accordingly is paramount. Designer Surily Goel sees it as a fun look. "It looks nice with a crop top and a bit of tummy showing. However, you need to be very tall. Wear it with a crop top and give definition to your waist. Opt for monochromes," she shares.

Designer Priyanka Modi of AM:PM sees it as a very big trend. "It's one of the the comfy-yet-luxe way of wearing the bottom. This variations of dhoti is perfect for summers. Fitted pants are so passe. Culottes are airy and luxurious. Throw in a crop top, regular shirt - it looks lovely fantastic."

Beat the heat in style
Opt for comfy fabrics like cotton and linen to steer clear of the heat. Designer Veda Raheja says, "If your on the shorter side pick a style in a darker colour or a print with verticals stripes to add length. For someone who is tall they can feel free to experiment with a bold graphic print or a pop coloured pair."
