Actor Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise, wrote a post on New Year’s Day, where he paid tribute to his friends, the late Carrie Fisher.
“We in the Star Wars family have had a very difficult week with the passing of Carrie Fisher, and her mother. We are grieving. For most of us, it's real grief, whether you met her or not, we all knew her. But it is New Year's weekend, and a lot of us will be getting together with "our family" to ring in the New Year. If you are at a show where we are, and plan to stop by our table, we want you to know it's ok. Talk about Carrie, mention her, share condolences. We grieve with you. And then, tell a joke and be happy, because it's what she would want us to do. She was a one of a kind, the emotional roller coaster is one we are all riding on together. Most importantly, as in all things Carrie Fisher, be real. May the Force be with you,” he wrote.
Earlier during the weekend, Mayhew and his wife, made a trip to the Nerd Year’s Eve Comic Con in Dallas. Fisher died on Wednesday while organisers were preparing for the convention; prompting them to put together a last minute tribute.
Mayhew and his wife Angie told the crowd they were happy to join the fans to share memories with their long-time friend. “She was a princess,” Mayhew said. “She can adapt to almost any situation and she did.”
Mayhew told stories of his first time meeting Carrie on the Star Wars set and of their times together through the years. Angie got laughs from the crowd as she remembered Fisher intensely interviewing her when she first married Peter; ultimately getting Fisher’s blessing and friendship.
