Behind the glamourous, picture-perfect lives they seem to lead, some stars have had troubled upbringings. Here are a few actors whose parents have broken the law
Lindsay Lohan
The actress hasn't exactly had model parents. Lindsay's father, Michael had served a three-year jail term in the 90s when he refused to testify against some Wall Street brokers. He later violated his probation when he flew to California to visit Lindsay who had been hospitalised at the time for asthma. In 2009, he was again sent to jail for trying to contact an ex-girlfriend who had an order of protection against him. A few years later he was arrested on a domestic violence charge for attacking his girlfriend. The actress' mother Dina too had a run in with the law last year when she was caught for speeding and drunk driving.
Hayden Panettiere
In 2008, Hayden's parents came under the spotlight when her father Alan was charged with misdemeanor battery after he allegedly assaulted his wife. He was said to be under the influence of alcohol at the time. The report said that Alan struck Hayden's mom a couple of times on the cheek. He however managed to avoid jail and was placed on probation for two years.
Drew Barrymore
Drew had a troubled childhood. Her father John who was also an actor, had a number of criminal records for alcohol overuse and possession of drugs. In fact, he was absent for most of her growing years. He was also arrested for spousal abuse when he had a brawl with his then wife actress Cara Williams. Despite his behaviour, Drew paid for his medical bills shortly before he died of cancer.
Demi Moore
Demi came from a broken home. Her dad Charles Harmon left her mother Virginia before the actress was born. Demi and her mom hardly got along and Virginia was constantly under the influence of alcohol. She also overdosed on pills and was arrested for drunk driving. Demi's half-brother James Craig Harmon was also jailed in 2005 for attacking his fiance.
Tobey Maguire
The Spider-man star's father was arrested in 1993 for robbing a bank. Vincent was caught as he did not even wear a mask and was put in jail for two years. Tobey, was said to be not very close to his dad during his childhood years but since then the two have reconciled.
Leighton Meester
Leighton's mother Constance was arrested and put in jail for smuggling 1200 pounds of marijuana from Jamaica to the United States in 1983. Her father Doug too was part of the smuggling ring and the actress was nearly born in prison. Post her birth, her mom served sixteen months in prison.
Woody Harrelson
Woody's father Charles who separated from his mother when he was just seven, was apparently a hit man. He was put in jail in 1973 for murdering Sam Degelia Jr, a grain dealer. In 1981, he was given two life sentences for the assassination of district judge John H Wood and eventually died in jail in 2007.
