What has happened to Bollywood's golden marriages? Suddenly there is a rush of separations.While some marriages like that of Imtiaz Ali and his wife Preeti have been officially called off, others, like director Priyadarshan and his wife Lizzie, have decided to give their marriage another chance. According to an unmarried filmmaker, "There is too much unconditional no-strings-attached sex floating around the entertainment industry. That's killing marriages."
According to this filmmaker, the broken marriages on display in the media are only the "tip of the iceberg". Many more couples are seriously on the verge of a split.
Here's looking at the three most serious break-ups in recent months.
Ended in divorce
Chitrangda Singh-Jyoti Randhawa: For months and years they denied having any problems in their marriage. Every time reports of their split came out, Chitrangda laughed the rumours off as idle gossip. She maintained that her marriage was doing fine. Now that the divorce papers are out in public, the actress has disappeared in embarrassment. Friends say her golfer husband never wanted her to pursue a career in films.She insisted and moved to Mumbai leaving their son in her husband and his family's care. An arrangement that cost her heavily. The courts have apparently granted Chitrangda her child's custody and Jyoti has got visiting rights.
The end doesn't seem near
Sussanne Khan-Hrithik Roshan: Theirs was the most shocking separation in the history of Bollywood marriages. They had what friends of the couple describe as a fairytale marriage. Two beautiful sons, made-for-each-other public appearances, laughter, ecstasy, enchantment... Then what happened? According to mutual friends of the duo, tensions were brewing between the couple for a very long time, though Hrithik didn't realise it. It was his stardom that caused the cracks in this case. Says a source, "He thought he was giving her everything she wanted but in seeing the larger picture he failed to see the cracks in their marriage." It's a separation no one wants to see end in a divorce, Hrithik included. He is putting every effort possible in making it work. According to her close friends, both Sussanne's and Hrithik's parents are trying their utmost to bring about a patch up. But Sussanne seems to be in mood to reconcile as of now. All the romantics are hoping she will change her mind.
The happy ending
Kalki Koechlin-Anurag Kashyap: Though according to Anurag and Kalki, they are only taking a break from one another, the truth according to friends is, their marriage is over. But this is the ideal kind of separation. They are still in touch. They defend each other and in a way will always be part of each other's life, whether or not this marriage surivies. Two sensible, mature individuals, who have accepted that they could not be happy together but they will always be happy for each other. While her director-husband has been creatively active in the past few years, Kalki too is trying to spread her wings. Independent of the marriage stamp, she is busy finding her bearings and her niche as an artiste. Friends of the actress say she never discusses her marriage with anyone. Dignity under duress is often the key to a cordial separation. Though Anurag is giving to some emotional posts on his Facebook page, this couple will survive as friends, even if they didn't survive as a couple.
