One of the BBCs biggest exports, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson respectively, is returning to the small screen on January 1, 2017. The first episode to air will be 'The Six Thatchers'.

Official Twitter handle of the show tweeted the good news.

The broken violin doesn't say that good things await Arthur Conan Doyle's creation adapted by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss to suit the modern time.

At the SDCC 2016 panel, writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss released the trailer for season 4 and they gave three words as clues - Thatcher, Smith, Sherrinford. They also promised that this season will be the darkest of them all and Sherlock will face one of Arthur Conan Doyle's finest villains.

That villain would be Culverton Smith, played by Toby Jones. Not to forget Jim Moriarty is returning too, so we will see Andrew Scott come back. They will be joined by Amanda Abbington, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, and Louise Brealey in their respective roles.

The speculations about the continuation of the show have been making the rounds since the shoot for season 3 began in 2013. After that, we have received one minisode, three full episodes, and a one-off special 'The Abominable Bride' from the showrunners. Given the increasing popularity and busy schedules of Freeman and Cumberbatch, it does look difficult to keep coming back for three episodes.

Talking about the possibility of coming back to the show after season 4, Benedict Cumberbatch said, "It might be the end of an era. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately. We never say never on the show. I'd love to revisit it, I'd love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we've made something very complete as it is, so I think we'll just wait and see."

Produced by Sue Vertue of Hartswood films, this season the BBC hit show for the first time roped in a female director, Rachel Talalay, to helm the ship. Nick Hurran who directed the last episode of season 3, 'His Last Vow', is back and a new entry in the form of Benjamin Caron has been made.
