Charlie Chaplin is the name associated with comedy, humour, and cinematic genius of the silent movie era. Born Charles Spencer Chaplin, in London, England, on April 16, 1889, the Englishman made the whole world laugh and fall in love with him and his craft.

His career spanning over six decades, Chaplin went from acting in the movies to directing, editing, producing them. His masterpieces, The Kid, City Lights, Modern Times, and The Great Dictator have stood the test of time and made him an immortal.

But there was another side to Chaplin. A side that was not working on the films. But just being a star the world is in awe of.

Chaplin had the pleasure of meeting the likes of Albert Einstein who attended the premiere of City Lights. He also met with Winston Churchill before he became UK prime minister. For people like us, who became fans of his work years after the maestro passed away, Chaplin recorded these interactions.

These archival footages of Chaplin without the garb and makeup, surely leaves a smile behind.

On what would have been his 128th birthday, making him the oldest man alive, let's take a look at five rare video clips from the real life of Charlie Chaplin.

1. Charlie Chaplin Reading Fan Mail

In this short clip, Chaplin seems to be sorting through his mail, deciding which one to read first based on the smell of the envelope. Those were the days when letters were written on scented paper instead of a gadget which adds emojis and filters to your text.

2. Max Linder Visits Charlie Chaplin

French comedian Linder visited Chaplin in LA in 1917. Towards the end of the clip, both actors are seen imitating the other one's acting manners and style.

3. Harry Lauder visits Charlie

Chaplin started his acting career in vaudeville style of theatre. Lauder was one of the greatest vaudeville actor and singer of his time. This is the footage of Chaplin and Lauder at Chaplin Studios in 1918.

4. Charlie Chaplin's Trick Film Sequence with Sir Albert and Lady Naylor-Leyland

In the modern era, we have awards to honour the great work in visual mastery in movies. Movies have a separate budget for the CGI/VFX effects and many of them rule the box office based on those new technologies. But in the following footage from 1923, Chaplin demonstrates the trick photography done when you only have one camera, a few volunteers, and good editing skills.

5. Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill on the set of City Lights

The entire Churchill clan visited the sets of what later turned out to be Chaplin's masterpiece, City Lights. It is amusing to see a lot younger Churchill enjoy the filmmaking process and the tour of the studio.
